Meson Laser Projector
Laser weaponry has been used for decades. The Union itself has used laser weapons since the very first battles and has refined and advanced it all the way up to the current day. The first laser projectors used were basic chemical lasers, used on ships as long range precision weapons. However these soon advanced to free electron lasers and later photonic energy based designs.
Laser weapon has always functioned as the Unions principle choice in precision ballistics and also has the added bonus of being extremely potent against shield systems, able to drain the enemy shield much quicker than most other weapons.
It was only very recently in a weapons upgrade that the Union switched to the Meson Laser Projector, a new and complex design which allowed to a much, much higher strength laser which the previous types could not produce without warping their focusing lenses. The Meson laser passed the trials with flying colours and can now be seen on nearly all Union ship classes to date.
The Meson laser projector is a very complex but powerful weapon system. Based around the production and unstable decay of the Meson particles themselves the only true reason this weapon is called a 'Meson Laser' is due to the Mesons that create the laser. The laser itself is just like any other, however far more powerful. Linked directly to the ships ZPM modules a Meson laser houses a very small particle accelerator (part of the reason why the turret is also a ball mount) this particle accelerator constantly functions and collides protons and anti-protons to form collisions. During these collisions many exotic particles are made, including a certain amount of Mesons, these are captured in a form of stasis and are then channelled to the main unit. Mesons by nature are extremely unstable exotic particles, when charged they decay into photons, huge numbers of them. One Meson decay can produce more photons than a normal photonic laser and so the beams of the Meson laser at almost 13 times more powerful by comparison. New focusing lenses had to be constructed to accommodate the power and void cooling was also added as a safe guard. From the central unit the Mesons are allowed to decay in a controlled process overseen by an AI. Mesons decay in a millionth of a microsecond and so the whole process is mind bogglingly fast and so has to be controlled by an AI. Once the mesons have decayed the HUGE number of photons are fired using an electric charge down the projector and through the focusing lenses. The focusing lenses focuses the photons into a beam and fires them towards the target. This whole process takes less than a second and the amount of photons produced by the decay can keep the beam steady and continuous for 32 seconds, a very long time for a beam weapon of such power.
The Meson Laser Projector also mounts additional void cooling hard points. These are used passively to keep the accelerator and focusing lenses array cool however additional sinks have been added so that after the weapon fires a stream for a long time it can quickly cool down and fire another. Reload time is usually around 8 seconds however after a 32 second beam it has a 14 second cool down and recharge time.
Effectiveness and Use
Meson Laser Projectors are found on all classes of Union ship, they are the principle pin point precision weapon and shield drainer of the Union arsenal. They are found typically in the side channels of Union ships where they can cover the flanks and also fire forward if necessary. Laser Projectors are often the second class of weapon to be fired in a battle, after the Phase missile launchers the Meson Lasers fire as the next longest range weapon. Their job is to drain the enemy shields and once done cripple or slice apart enemy ships with their beams. Due to the ball mount of a Meson Laser Projector they can also rapidly transverse and lock on. They have a full sensor suite on board and can engage fast targets such as corvettes and even strike craft with hilarious ease, and due to the power of the beam can blow them apart with even less effort. Meson lasers have also been known to help shoot down incoming missiles or torpedoes if necessary as their precision and rapid targeting allows for such shots and smaller tiny versions are frequently used in the SENTINEL CIWS used by the Union to protect its ships. Unfortunately the downside to these weapons is their lack of an AOE or blast, this limits their effectiveness against enemy swarms or large groups of units, as they can only target one at a time. However if they are particularly weak enemies the Meson Laser may be able to rake them with the beam and destroy them with a touch, this is most often the case with small craft and missiles. Anything bigger requires longer beam time on target.
The Following has been put here to show the effect and use of Meson Laser Projectors
(made by youtube clips and stuff this helps show that they do and look like all videos etc. belong to their respective owners)
The Following video shows what Meson Laser Projector would be like at the following times: 2:27 2:47 2:58 6:42 in this video. The beams would be exactly the same as shown, however would be much more powerful.

I thank him greatly for the work he has done!
This is the second of the line up for the Weapons of the Union Navy Core. Next is the Phase Missile Launcher
