Nex Light Cruiser by EmperorMyric Nex Light Cruiser by EmperorMyric
This is a Ship design comissioned from two of my freinds who are going to be joining Ancerious very soon. They have comissioned me to do all their art until they can do it themselves and so with alot of input from them i am helping them produce their own race.

A unique one at that, called the Nex.

Here is their light cruiser.

Nex Vitreous class Light Cruiser:

Overview: The Vitreous class Light Cruiser is the mainstay of the Nex Space Faring force and is frequently seen in fleets and on its own patrolling Nex space. Like all Nex technology the Vitreous class is grown/sculpted from the unique bio crystal which all Nex can manipulate and while not as strong as other races heavier armours is light enough to let the ship go faster than other races equivalents. Neither should the armament of the Vitreous be ignored for it carriers Arc weapons and Prism lances. The main focus of the Vitreous is to hunt down other escorts and light cruisers using its exceptional speed to dodge most attacks. It is a fool who thinks they can outrun a Nex light cruiser.

Armament: The Vitreous uses both Arc and Prism weaponry bu using he very ship's hull itself. These weapons allow the Vitreous to engage larger warships making the light cruiser a brilliant raider and hit and run specialist. It carriers 8 Arc Projectors and 12 Prism Cannons.

Arc Weapons: these weapons channel energy through the ship directly from the ships energy flow to the outer hull where the projectors or weapon sites are located. Here the power builds to lethally high levels before being discharged in massive bolts of lightning capable of ripping armour and shields apart, this may also have the effect of a localised EMP on the target ship and so leave it vulnerable for subsequent strafing runs or other ships. These weapons are relatively medium ranged as the power will spread instead of being concentrated on target meaning if the enemy ships are close enough multiple may even be hit with one shot.

Prism weapons: a lot like their Arc cousins the Prism weapon too channels power from the ships power flow to the weapon sites. Here this power builds until sufficient levels are reached. The power is then fired through a sort of lensing crystal found under the outer hull. The power is then focused by the outer hull into a incredibly potent cutting beam able to slice open warships and dissect smaller craft. These along with the Arc weapons can keep up an average rate of fire of around 10 shots a minute, As not to drain the power flow of the ship too much.

Defences: The Vitreous class mounts a Bio Crystal hull made out of Diamantide, native to the home worlds of the Nex. This hull is around 1.5 ft at certain places and is able to withstand direct kinetic fire to good effect. Unfortunately after most battles Nex moulders have to re mould the crystal to replace the chips and fractures that will occur after combat. As for energy weapons the Diamantide hull actually will absorb most of the energy (the impact will still do damage and so will the excess energy) but the energy will be absorbed and redirected through the Power flow of the ship to boost certain systems. Though the absorption does have its limits the thicker the hull the more that can be absorbed.
The Vitreous also mounts a few small scale Arc and Prism weapons to engage enemy fighters at close range like a CIWS.

Power plant: The Nex do not use reactors. Not in the conventional sense. Diamantide itself produces energy, low levels but as the entire ship and most things in it are made from the crystal this power supply is pretty much endless. The ship can then distribute the energy where its needed, to power weapons, engines etc. These systems can be increased in combat but at a cost elsewhere. As the energy flow will always be equal boosting say weapons means other systems start to lose power and vi ceversa. In this respect Nex captains are masters of knowing when to give and take power away from systems.

Electronic capabilities: The Vitreous class mounts a New crystalline computer to oversee the ships systems and also to provide information and other duties for the crew. These computers have no hacking ability whatsoever but so have incredible resilience to being hacked, due to a kind of semi sentient piece of code that wanders to the computer destroying all other scrap code and intrusions.

Stealth: The Vitreous is not equipped with Nex stealth systems.

Crew: The Vitreous carries a Nex crew of around 390 crew.

Attack craft: The Vitreous is not equipped with attack craft hangars.

Speed and engines: The Vitreous is equipped with Gravimetric engines which allow the ship to achieve a normal sub light speed of around 0.8 Light, though this can be pushed to 0.8989 light if other systems are drained of power. The Light cruiser is also equipped with a Nex Fold drive for FTL.

this is a top down view.

Please comment :) feed back is appreciated.

nothing said resistance to laser beams!

and ANYONE is a fool if they think they can run from light without warping!

Laser beams are energy weapons...

and actually yes you can. light travels at the speed of light. That is not instant contact, if a ship is several light minutes from another then a projectile travelling at the speed of light will take several minutes to hit them meaning they can move out the way. Light takes time to get to places. Why do you think we have to wait for light from the sun?

well, if it's attacking your ship, you only have to wait, what? a few MS's?

not nessecarily, if you remember space even in small areas is thousands of KM across, in order to cover those distances fast ships must travel thousands of KM per second, this means ships will more tan likely either:

Be engaging at ranges where most shots will miss due to such extreme ranges and the ships moving out the way.

Be engaging at full speed meaning the fleets or ships pass in the time space of milli seconds so only a few hits will be scored and only with the help of targtiing computers.

Or ships will standoff at each other going incredibly slowly or even completely still while trading shots that will hit instantly.

Unfortunately most people think the latter is what always happen, in real life only the second one will ever happen.

i know i always thought that too!

Until i read a book series called the Lost fleet by Jack Campbell, probably the best sco fi series ive ever seen.

Its sort of a near future sci fi with ultra realism and its amazing, gives me all of my space battle knowledge and such. worth a read

It looks rather Tholian, to me at least. Has the Nakai's angular aspect, but silver tones.

Tholian?

And true though i tried to keep it angular due to the crystal nature
