Description

Joint Triarch Industries-Grand Empire of Capitol Baraeus Class Destroyer:

Overview: With the Mk.3 fleet being drawn up and constructed Capitol turned to more potential joint projects to assist in improving its Mk.3 designs. The Suma Histrionica project with the Axioms was the main inspiration and Focus of the Mk.3 designs however much of the Mk.3 fleets armour and shield designs were in fact built and tested on another Joint project ship. The Baraeus class destroyer was started after the Suma Histrionica project and also took design inspiration from the Co-Axiom designed craft, this time combining the technology with Triarch industries prestigious engineering. With Triarchs excellent armour and shield technology the Azanium compound which is used in the Mk.3 fleet was pioneered and tested on this vessel along with the new Tachyon Point Shield (TPS system). While the Baraeus class was a testbed for new technologies around 50 of them were built and while they are regulated to reserve trials they are now being pushed to more frontline duties with a contract for 250 more forwarded to Triarch for approval. Despite its size the Baraeus is incredibly well defended and retains its speed well, giving the Capitol space forces a fast yet heavily defended craft, meanwhile Triarch get the vessel as a very fast scouting craft that can hold its own in combat and will be taking 50 of the new orders as their own.

Armament: The Baraeus class mounts a lighter armament than the Hydra however it still retains the 3 spinal Tachyon Arrows for its main attack weapon. 4 Heavy dual railgun mounts and 10 Heavy quad mass driver emplacements give the ship its secondary armaments alongside multiple light railguns and mass drivers. The ship also mounts excellent point defence as well as 2 Photon lances for all round missile or ship defence. Finally the ship mounts 8 missile launchers which can launch either thermonuclear munitions or Triarchs bomb pumped laser defense missiles.

Mass Drivers: Triarchs principle weapon system, the Mass Driver. Built upon Union designs as Triarch was once part of the Union, these Mass drivers are nearly the same in aspect. However Triarch Mass drivers do not have void cooling like the Union guns, but do have nano assemblers. Triarch Mass drivers trade ROF for much higher calibre and so typically are far larger than their opposites. These Mass drivers can either fire high intensity penetrator rounds, high explosive rounds, Beehive Anti attack craft rounds or saturation bombardment rounds.

Railguns: Taken from Union specifications while not as advanced as the Unions Mass Drivers Capitols new railgun technology is vastly superior to their old rocket propelled cannons. Now they can engage enemies at speed and while still not dealing massive amounts of damage per shot Capitol have managed to increase their ROF to around 450 shots per minute. This results in the rails being changed after every engagement but also a serious boost in firepower.

Missile Launchers: Made to fire Capitols primary anti-ship missile at extremely long ranges these weapons have limited supplies though most of the missile launchers in Capitols arsenal have been changed to fire thermo nuclear munitions. These new fusion warheads can produce yields from 500-900MT each easily able to damage enemy ships and scour worlds clean of all life. The last is a warhead with an independently targetable laser, when fired the laser deploys and can engage up to 300 soft targets (such as other missiles and fighters) enabling the vessel to destroy vast swarms of enemy targets and aid its own CIWS.

Tachyon Arrow: Tachyon Arrow profile

Photon Lances: essentially large laser arrays each Photon lance is a large spherical lensing emplacement through which up to as many as 3000 high intensity lasers can be fired at any one time. This allows the vessel to engage vast amounts of targets either destroying large numbers of attack craft or escorts or using large beams to cut ships apart at range, while not as powerful as some of the more exotic laser weapons around it is a tried and tested weapon with excellent versatility.

Defences: The Bareus mounts around 8ft of Azanium armour plating with composite layers of ballistic gels and heat resistant materials. This new type of armour was developed with the help of Triarch Industries and is now able to take much more damage from both kinetic and energy weapons than the previous armour. The Baraeus as well is protected by 4 medium shield generators capable to taking many direct hits each before they need to recharge again. Capitols new shield technology allows them to partially absorb around 11% of an enemy energy weapon shot and use it to charge the ships Tachyon Arrows if it has any.

Tachyon Point Shields: A new development available only to the new Mk.3 fleet ships the Tachyon Shield is a point defense shield able to protect very specific parts of the ship when under attack or to intercept very specific enemy attacks with almost total impunity. Able to siphon off generated Tachyons from the ships TAs and route them through specialized shield banks all over the ship the vessel can produce for a few seconds a shield of pure Tachyons before they merely disappear, the shield coverage is only able to intercept specific shots and such siphoning from the TAs prevents their fire however the shield can withstand even a shot from a dreadnought level railgun with no damage to the ship, however the system is far from perfect and so the ships main shields provide the primary protection, the Tachyon shield being used only as a last ditch secondary. The more TAs a ship has the more the shield can be used and the larger the area covered.

Alongside the TPS system the destroyer also mounts Triarch Refraction shielding. Evolving from the traditional approach of close-range shields that hug the ship and deflect kinetic directed energy attacks as well as modular shields that cover individual portions of vessels to retain redundancy, Triarch composite shields are their ships' biggest survivability multiplier. Composite shields are concentric arrangements of shielding expanding for thousands of kilometers from the ship divided into two types: refraction and reflection shields.

The outermost layers, separated by hundreds of kilometers each, act as extremely weak shields meant to let most attacks through but not without exerting a minute force upon them, altering their course by fractions of a degree without doing any major damage to the projectiles themselves or absorbing energy attacks. However, with the extreme distances involved and the numerous "nudges" that enemy projectiles receive, the extremely simple shielding becomes capable of making even extremely high-energy attacks miss the ship altogether. As they are meant to redirect rather than absorb hits, these outer "refraction shields" are very low-energy, allowing them their great size. To avoid running the risk of redirecting attacks into ships flying behind the target, the refraction shields can be adjusted to direct the attacks on a desired direction. Within the huge shroud created by the refraction shields and closer to the ships, additional layers of high-energy "reflection shields" are encased, separated from one another by a few kilometers to act as spaced armor.

Due to their efficiency and the power banks built into most Triarch ships, composite shields are also capable of being overcharged. Energy can be redirected from the ships unused weaponry and engines while outside of battle to charge up large banks of supercapacitors which, as soon as the ship enters the battlefield, will begin powering the energy in alongside the ships' reactor with stored energy. While limited in duration to the supercapacitors' charge, this overcharge allows Triarch ships to be even more heavily protected for a limited ammount of time.

Power plant: The Baraeus runs on 6 Cold Nuclear Fusion reactors for energy, this system was co-designed in this instance with Triarch Industries who also use Cold fusion powerplants. The reactors are superior to the Mk.2 vessels and have even more power output meaning more shots from the TAs and increased shield output and engine output all round, with less space taken up by the generators.

Electronic capabilities: The Baraeus is run by a advanced computer system which is on the very edge of computational capability bordering on AI. This system can aid targeting, calculate anything that is needed and also provide limited control over the ships actions. The system also can provide excellent ECM coverage with the aid of Triarch electronic systems also being installed on the vessel.

Crew: The Baraeus has a crew of 2200 men. All of which are human. Around 50 are commissars.

Attack craft: The Baraeus does not mount dedicated attack craft hangars and must rely on other ships to provide attack craft cover.

Speed and Engines: The Baraeus is equipped with 4 Gravitic drives and can reach speeds of up to 0.7 Light speed in a reasonable amount of time. It is also equipped with a Triarch Slipspace drive.
